In paid social, metrics matter. But looking at any one of them in isolation can give you a false sense of security—or success. CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost), MER (Marketing Efficiency Ratio), and LTV (Customer Lifetime Value) all tell you something important. But when you connect them, they tell you something useful.
Understanding each on its own is helpful, but the real clarity comes when you layer them together. That’s when you can actually make decisions that help you scale sustainably.
Let’s start with CAC. It tells you what it costs to get a new customer in the door. Great. But then what? If those customers don’t stick around, or they make one small purchase and disappear, you’re left with low profit margins and limited growth. That’s why CAC only works when viewed alongside LTV. If LTV is strong, you can afford a higher CAC. If it’s weak, even a “cheap” customer might not be worth the spend.
Then there’s MER. It’s the big-picture check-in, the one that keeps your team (and your budget) grounded. MER looks at your total revenue versus total ad spend. Unlike ROAS (Return On Ad Spend), which can be skewed at the campaign level or impacted by attribution quirks, MER gives you the macro view of how efficiently your marketing is driving revenue. It won’t tell you why something is working, but it will show you if it is.
When you bring these metrics together, CAC, MER, and LTV, you stop guessing and start understanding. You can spot patterns, catch issues early, and make calls that actually move the business forward. In an increasingly noisy and complex media landscape, more data isn’t the goal. Better interpretation is.
So the next time you’re reviewing performance, don’t stop at CAC or a nice ROAS number. Zoom out. Ask: What’s our MER? What’s the LTV of the customers we’re bringing in? Are we scaling profitably, or just spending more to grow faster? That’s when your metrics become more than numbers—they become decisions.
